Born in Yurihonjo City, Akita

After polishing his skills for 40 years at the “Ikoma-nuri lacquerware workshop” in Akita City, he established “Saito Lacquer Art Workshop” and began producing “Akita Lacquer(Akita-nuri)” lacquerware. He creates a wide variety of works using various techniques such as Raden (mother-of-pearl inlays) and eggshells, with his skillful polishing technique. He also holds workshops in the hope of spreading “Akita-nuri” to the next generation. 

Awarded “Contemporary Master Craftsman” by the Ministry of Health in 2008

ーーWhat is Akita Lacquer (Akita-nuri)?

A Lacquerware produced by Mintaro Kano, a native of Akita City, from the early Showa period to the postwar period. Currently, Kunio Saito produces “Akita-nuri” as “lacquerware made in Akita”. He combines various techniques such as colored urushi, Raden(Mother-of-pearl inlay), eggshells, gold powder, etc., with the main technique of polishing, to produce a wide variety of lacquer ware.
